BRAZOS IV Agreement and Rules

  • Brazos is an invitation-only chess tournament (team match)
  • All match players will know their pairings and have about three weeks to study and prepare
  • Two Teams on 10 or more boards (16 max including Reserves):
    • Tarrant Chess Team - Consisting of qualified chess players living in
      • Tarrant County
    • Waco Chess Team - Consisting of qualified chess players living in
      • Bell County
      • McLennan County
  • Match Date and Time
    • Saturday, 26 October 2019
    • 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM
  • Location is the Bullock Room, Hill College, Hillsboro, Texas 76645.

  • Entrance Fee:  $10 cash from each player (including masters)
  • Registration:  8:00 AM to 9:30 AM
  • Team Photos:  9:30 AM to 9:45 AM
  • Verify Pairings:  9:45 AM to 10:00 AM

  • Format:  Two game match with same opponent (like RRSO)
    • Round One:  10:00 AM
    • Round Two:  2:00 PM
    • Time Control:  Game/60 with 30 second increment (no delay).
  • Colors:
    • Tarrant Chess Team (Visitors) has White in Round One
    • Waco Chess Team (Home) has Black in Round One
    • Colors reverse for Round Two
    • For all future BRAZOS matches the Home and Visiting Teams designation will alternate
  • Tiebreaker:  Defending Champion retains the title unless defeated.

  • Bring boards, sets and clocks.  None provided

  • Qualified Chess Player - Defined
    • You have provided your Team Captain the following information:
      • Name *
      • US Chess ID *
      • Email Address *
      • Phone Number *
      • Birth Year *
      • City *
      • Your US Chess Membership must be current up through 31 October 2019 (no USCF memberships will be sold on site) *
        • NOTE:  If you want to play in the BRAZOS IV match section and your USCF membership expires before 31 October 2019, please DO NOT WAIT to extend your membership.  Match pairings are announced on 11 October 2019.  If you wait until the last possible moment to become 100 percent "GREEN" you probably won't play in the match section because we can't find you a suitable opponent in time.  Also spaces are limited.
    • Birth year is 2005 or earlier *
    • Lives in Bell, MeClennan or Tarrant Counties (according to where USCF has player's address) *
      • On a case-by-case basis, the two team captains can agree to add qualified players who live outside Bell, McLennan and Tarrant Counties *
    • Pays $10 entrance fee (cash).

    * The above will be verified before the player is paired.

  • Waco Chess Team Captain is Carmen Chairez.
  • Anyone not eligible or scheduled to play in the match section, with a valid US Chess membership, may play in a separate section that does not affect the outcome of the primary team match.  Entrance fee will be the same as for everyone else ($10).
  • We have no budget for a janitor.  We request all participants pitch in during set up and clean up.
  • Lunch is available in the Student Cafeteria (Chef Annette, Manager) or at several nearby fast-food restaurants.
  • All participants are invited to the annual Victory Dinner after the match.  Location:  Lone Star Cafe, 100 Dynasty Dr. Hillsboro, TX 76645.  Note:  If "Homecoming Weekend" conflicts with BRAZOS IV "Plan B (another location)" will be implimented.
  • Recruiting is a joint effort by the Team Captains and the Chief TD.  Players are invited one-by-one based on established ratings, age and current USCF membership.  Both team captains must agree on each pairing.  The intent is to create a fun evenly-paired match all will enjoy.

    The following Players are Qualified to use US Chess approved move recording devices, such as Monroi or Plycount, in Tournaments organized and/or directed by Jim Hollingsworth.   ALL OTHERS MUST RECORD USING PROVIDED SCORE SHEETS and TURN IN THE WHITE COPY immediately after the game.

    If you would like to use a US Chess approved move recording devices, such as Monroi or Plycount, and get your name added to the above list there is only one simple task you must accomplish.   Prove you can keep your word so the Chief TD will receive your PGN files within 24 hours after BRAZOS IV.

    HINT:   Don't wait until check-in to get your name added to the list.   Contact the Chief TD and prove you can comply with Rule 15G, US Chess Rulebook, Edition 7 without delay.

    Please keep in mind, this is a game that is supposed to fun for everybody.   But after each BRAZOS, RRSO, TXAFCC, TXWCC, Etc., the Organizer/Chief TD has to spend a lot of time dealing with unanswered emails, unanswered phone messages, and excuses like "The dog ate it."

    The games are important.   The whole world will see and marvel at them.   And let's all have fun.

    • This is a US Chess rated event.  US Chess Rule Book, 7th Edition, is in effect.
    • A copy of all scoresheets must be turned into the Chief TD.  Any player refusing to do this may not be invited to BRAZOS V.
    • US Chess approved move recording devices, such as Monroi or Plycount, are welcomed and highly encouraged.  The player must email the moves to the Chief TD within 24 hours.
    • All Brazos games will be displayed on this website for the enjoyment, education and improvement of all.  Also, an article with games will be presented to Texas Knights for publication.

    • If you have been contacted and invited, please know the Organizers sincerely believe you have a lot of positives valued in any chess player.  Please confirm quickly so we can shorten our search.

    • If you are interested in playing in Brazos and haven't been contacted, please tell us without delay.

    • TXAFC is dedicated to organizing and sponsoring chess tournaments for chess playing veterans, and dedicated to assisting veterans playing in chess tournaments.

      All donations above Entrance Fee costs are fully tax deductible and Tax Certificates will be issued.

      Only six boards are needed to cover the room's rent and rating costs. Everything above that goes to support chess-playing Veterans.
